View Full Version : How often is TOO often?
How often can you tan without burning out your skin? I've read articles that say if you over-tan you can burn out your melanin, but they never said exactly how much tanning it took to do that.

I don't know if I believe that you can burn out your melanin, but if you can, the answer would probably be "it depends". Depends on your body chemistry, etc. In other words, I have no idea!

Actually the more melanin you have the darker your natural skin is. Fairer people have less melanin and can only absorb so many UV rays before burning. It's the burning that can cause damage and can make you more susceptible to skin cancer. This is why fairer people have to careful. This is also why I go with the sunless tanning. I'm checking into airbrushing as the Mystic Tan has been a bit uneven on me. Of course the fact that my father died of Melanoma six years ago is a huge reason for me to not go the UV way. Btw, my father tanned fairly easily but was Scandinavian so was still fair. Hope this helps.

I would say that more than every other day is too much, but if you're really fair, you should prob. go twice a week.

Solar Elastosis: This is where yoru skin's elastic tissue begins to degrade. Sompe people have tried for years to break through their tanning plateau. What they dont realize is they broke through a long time ago, and have reached their bodies natural limits on darkness... Frequent and prolonged exposure beyond sensible limits contributes to this condition.
Age Spots: (Also called Liver Spots, have nothing to do with your liver) Caused from years of over exposure. Cosmetically less than pleasant markings usually show up in the 40's.
Photoaging: Process in which natural skin aging is accelerated significantly by repeated overexpousre to UV, particulary UVA. Whereas natural skin aging produces thinner skin that often appears delicate and translucent with fine wrinkles, photoaging produces course wrinkles, leathery skin and deep furrows. (Takes years to begin showing up)
Telangiectasia: Chronic enlargement of capillaries and blood vessles in the skin. Look similar to varicose veins, but are somewhat bltochy in appearance. Ouccurs most often in face and thighs. Caused by years of Overexposure.
and of course...
Skin Cancer: Repeated overexposure to ultraviolet light has been linked to the development of certain types fo skin cancer in humans. THAT IS WHY ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT EMISSION IS CAREFULLY CONTROLLED IN TANNING EQUIPMENT TO MINIMIZE THE RISK OF OVEREXPOSURE AND SUNBURN. Overexposure can damage normal skin cells and cause dormant pre-cancer cells to divide uncontrollably, which can lead to skin cancer 10 to 30 years after the overexposure occured.

Key word: overexposure. Then add: repeated. Repeated overexposure in contrast to MODERATION.
Tan slow, tan smart, NEVER burn.

smart move star . and, i'm not going to sound like a health-freak like I use sunless tanners all year, cuz i dont. for one month of the year i go to the tanning beds so that when i go swimming my sunless tanner doesnt wash off. so for every 12 years that goes by i do about as much damage as you do to your skin in one year. So i think i take pretty good care of my skin .

Anybody have any suggestions for lessening or lightening age spots (for some reason liver spots sound worse!)? Do glycolic peels help? As a 46 yr. old I'm starting to see them, probably from all those sunburns when I was young and ignorant. Thanks

valmal - during your tanning sessions i would reccomend covering your face with the provided towel and pick up a bottle of banana boat soft medium blend or banana boat deep dark sunless tanners(depending on how dark your tan is) and use tha ton your face to reduce any wrinkles. Be sure to do your hair line (apply sparingly there), eyebrows, eye lids, nose, (DONT PUT ON EARS), kneck (front and back), and anywhere else you are covering up with your towel.
I only use sunless tanners because "Overexposure" is laying out excessively or basically trying to get tan. "Exposure" would be walking to your car, maybe going to a picnic with SPF on. Daily things we do when we cannot avoid the sun.
This is what the FDA recommends for safe tanning:

I have a question for you... Not trying to sound sarcastic but why are you here? Is it to bash those that use tanning beds? I don't get it, many of your post were deleted etc by moderators and you yourself say you only use sunless tanning lotion. So why do you want to know about those of us that are *crazy* and use the beds?
Uh well, I don't know WHY she is here, but I don't think this is a private board so, you know, what can you do? Different opinions will be expressed.

In protest against sunless tanning and its promoters, I am going to my tanning salon every day this week!

LOL,Hyperion! We sunless tanners LOVE being tan too. We just can't do it the UV way for various reasons including spending too many years in the sun and melanoma concerns. I agree the beds are the way to go if you want the UV rays and you have good genes.

What is your PROBLEM? I have no idea who biotanner is. I wouldn't even TAKE the pill if/when it becomes available.
All I am standing up for is freedom of expression, not some DRUG.
You had better be prepared to provide PROOF of your insinuations by the way.
I don't take kindly to these accusations of impersonation.
How many IDs do YOU have, mommy??
