Wow! I am so glad I am not the only one...I was beginning to think I was losing my mind! I mean, I was thinking 'how could I feel fatter after just one day of eating a few extra carbs'--but I sure do!!
Tomorrow is back to 20 STRICT!! I never want to feel like this again!

Sometimes when I eat more than I am used to, I feel very sluggish and I get headaches. Sometimes I even get a little bloated.

UMM I hate to braek it to you but I eat like 250 grams a day. I am also 120 pounds 5'5 and used to weigh 215. IT'S NOT ABOUT CARBS, but overall fat and calorie intake. I am a nurse, and part of my study was dietary in nature. At age 15 I was 215! I started eating healthy choice dinners, and LOTS OF FRIUT.I dropped down to 100 in 6 months, but felt it was tooo skinny...

Oh yeah, and I exericse I and 1/2 hours a day. I have abs like Janet jacksons.. AND LOW CARB KILLS YOUR KIDNEYS...It is bad for you...YOU CAN BE SKINNY, AND STILL BE READY FOR A HEART attack because of all the fat. Eating lots of friut helps you live longer by the way to. I HAVE WORKED with PATIENTS in partial KIDNEY FAILURE FROM LOW CARB...JUST ASK ANY DOCTOR..I am serious. I actually care.

Okay... first of all... CariFairy: you exercize 1 1/2 hours a day, so you NEED carbs for the energy. Most people on low carb diets don't exercize that much. If you're going to exercise, you need the carbs. If you aren't... the carbs are just gonna turn to sugar. And low carb diets aren't saying that you should go in excess w/ the fats anyway, so if you do it the right way like you're supposed to, you shouldn't have problems. Yeah.

I eat in excess of 300 carbs daily. Then again I am constantly doing something physical and trying to gain weight and muscle mass. I dont' think its the lack of carbs but rather the high protein that is causing kidney problems. That can be avoided by drinking plenty of water and always staying hydrated
monkeygirl
02-09-2004, 11:36 AM
Well, you're all right. The more active you are, the more carbohydrates you'll probably need. However for the majority if people who exercise moderately, there's nothing wrong with cutting back on carbs, many people are eating too many to begin with, so cutting back is the best thing they can do. As far as protein, you can eat too much of that as well. Water is always important, not just for kidneys, but for your whole body in general. So many times when you feel hungry, you're actually thirsty, even though you might not feel like you need a drink, try an 8 oz glass of water and wait for half an hour, more often than not, you won't feel that vague hungry feeling anymore.
As for me, I can only fit about 45 min of exercise in per day. I have a life, which involves a husband, house and two kids. I don't have time to exercise a lot per day, nor do I want to..there's so many other things I'd rather do. But to each their own, right?

i think if you get a balance of everything, and not stay away from one particular thing, you will be just fine. but it depends on your body type.

I swim everyday in the summer and 3 times a week at the indoor pool in the winter...I kayak, I ride horses, I handcycle all around main street and ocean drive...I probably do more exercise than most able bodied people! LOL I do modified yoga also.
CariFairy, you do your thing, I'll do mine. thanks! My TOTAL cholestrol is only 120!!!! How many people can say that at 36? According to my doc, not many. She also said my heart is healthier than ever---I suppose those tests could be wrong...but that would be an odd coincidence for the tests to be wrong for me and my father who lost 45 pounds on Atkins over a year ago and was able to stop taking HBP meds, high chol. meds, and got rid of any symptoms of type II diabetes.
I have yearly ultrasounds on my kidneys and have ever since my accident in 1987 and all looks fine and dandy. Thanks for your concern, tho.
Boo, I have been doing low-carb for over a year and the more strict regime of Atkins for 6 months now. I stayed strictly under 20 carbs for about 2 months and now try to just linger between 20 and 30 (usually closer to 30) but I went a lil crazy yesterday and did 40 carbs.
So far today I have only had 5 carbs, so I am getting back on track...I tend to munch when I get down and with my mom's b-day being over the weekend, I was really missing not being able to make a big deal out of it for her like I normally did. :::shrug:::

20 carbs!!!! Woah I would die. I have no clue how many carbs I eat a day, but I'd say around 300 or more. I'm lookin at the back of my Goldfish package and it says for one serving it has like 19 grams of carbs. Don't know how many actual gold fish, pry a handful or so.
I would kill my self without carbs!!!!!

I am not saying you cannot be healthy.. But I lost over 100 pounds on a LOWER FAT diet and kept it off for 7 yrs. I have never known anyone on atkins to loose 100 pounds...
sugarpie
02-10-2004, 08:22 PM
I have never needed to lose 100 pounds, thank God...
I was at my heaviest ever when I started Atkins and I needed to lose 40 pounds. On Discovery Health last week, there was a woman in the UK who had lost almost 200 pounds on the Atkins diet...and she was in the process of getting HUGE amounts of excess skin surgically removed...the special was called "Trashcan full of skin" you can read about it on the discovery website.
I did the lowfat thing from the time I had my son until I started Atkins...and I am a fanatic about whatever I do. I lost a few pounds and that was it...then from there it seemed like every year I would gain a few pounds...same with my sister...she even went as far as becoming Vegan...and right now, she weighs about 30 pounds more than I do (at the same height).
I'm happy with my way of eating...I don't feel deprived...I feel more fit and full of energy that I have for most of my adult life. My skin is pretty, my hair gorws like crazy...my nails are strong...it's a good thing FOR ME.
What works for one person will never be the Holy Grail for everyone else.

oh, forgot to add...go to the atkins website, or the lowcarbcafe, or any of those sites and you will literally find TONS of people who have lost 100+ pounds on Atkins.

We members of the Atkins Cult (LOL) actually eat fruit!!! I eat strawberries and raspberries with regularity...and I eat at least a full cup of raw salad greens a day as well as some other veggies, either cooked or raw, green beans, cauliflower, broccoli, etc.
That is such a stooopid misconception that the Atkins diet is only meat, cheese, and fats.

I think it can be a common misconception because a lot of people really tend to do Atkins the wrong way.I have done nursing in many settings. And sometimes people will come in and say they are on atkins, but they are not really doing it by the book. I tell them that it is about getting the processed junk out of your life. I was just curious mostly as to how you ate, if it included fruit......

what happens to the excess skin when you lose 100 pounds? can you tone it up with exercise or do you have to have it removed?
sugarpie

I am wondering that, too...I know with even having lost a lot less than 100 pounds, that the skin where I used to have a double chin is a little loose...
but so was my dads when he lost it and after about a year, it tightened up...
so I figure if it can tighten up at almost 70, then it can tighten up on me...both my dad and I lost approx. the same amount of weight...me slightly less than him.

Dr. Atkins was obese when he died. If you want to stay trim and slender, you should eliminate all foods that contain high fructose corn syrup. Eating potatoes or fresh bread without preservatives is ok. Always eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. AVOID FAST FOOD AT ALL COST!!!

duh! high fructose corn syrup...I don't eat ANY sugars (that includes corn syrups, brainiac) unless they are in the form of FRUIT.
Dr. Atkins was not obese when he died...he was trim, OLD and he slipped on ice and bashed his head on the sidewalk outside his home.
To all the Atkins haters- if you hate it so much, don't freakin do it...but do you honestly think that because YOU said it's bad, I'm going to stop!?!?
you do your thing and we who do Atkins and are healthier for having done so, will do our thing. unlike most of the naysayers, I've actually done LOTS and LOTS of research (and I know Honeybee has, too) and have seen firsthand the results on both weight and overall health.

I can only speak from what I know on this one. My mom did a modified version of the Atkins diet through the Cleveland Clinic and lost 85 lbs. Now because she is older, 64, and has back problems that prevent her from doing a lot of exercise she does have a lot of excess skin that needs to be removed.
Being that I could stand to lose a good 50 lbs I was concerned about this extra skin issue and talked to my doc about it (she runs the diet program at the clinic). She said that as long as you lose the weight gradually and do toning exercises (she suggested Curves), excess skin shouldn't be a huge deal for me. Also, the fact that I'm 28 and my skin is still pretty elastic helps. I guess time will tell.

My skin tightened up for the most part, I was very active though. I exercised about an hour and a half a day. I did a lot of wieght training which helped. I LOST 100 pounds 6/1/2 yrs ago, so my skin has really come around. I still have some stretch marks though. I am almost 22, I lost all of my wieght at 15. At first I had a bit more excess skin, so I upped my exercise routine. BY THE WAY DR ATKINS WAS NOT OBESE!!BECAUSE HE WAS OLD he did not have as much muscle tone.

Hi I lost 100 pounds 6/1/2 yrs ago. I exercised and wieght trained a lot so most of my excess skin was gone by age 17. I lost all of my weight at age 15, and now at age 22(soon) I am 5'5 and weigh 118...I thought I was 120 but oh well. I do have stretch marks , but they are very light. DR ATKINS was no00t obese! He was old, and old people tend not to look as fit. DON'T forget that a camera adds 10 pounds. WHILE i Don't follow atkins per-say, I see it as valuable to wieght loss

probly depends on the elasticity of the skin too..i wonder if carney wilson weight trains..i know she had some excess skin removed but she was really obese..skin is amazing..just think of how it stretches from infancy to adulthood..WOW!
