View Full Version : Are tanners more physically fit?

Kiliki

Hi-

I am new to tanning and I recently lost a bunch of weight and in the process of losing more. I also workout 4-5x per week.

Tanning became an interest of mine recently and I am wondering if anyone thinks there is a correlation between tanning and fitness. Do tanners tend to workout or eat healthier than the average person?

This website is great! Thanks for you thoughts!

-Kristi

In my experience, tanning brings ppl from every walk of life. Big, small, rich, not-so-rich, etc.

I guess, people who are working out / physically exercising have also a strong tendency to eat healty - and to tan. So if you meet a physically fit person, itīs likely that this woman or man is also tan - but that has nothing to do with the tanning itself. There are many fat and unsporty tanners.

Well I workout 4 times a week also, not sure about eating healthier.... haha
But I think it just makes me feel better cause it I think it makes you look better.

Hi Salonpro! I lost 40lbs and I have some to go, doing a low carb diet. I feel so much better. Now that I see my body changing for the better, a good tan really polishes it off!

We have all sorts of people who tan as well, but tanning obviously makes you feel better and look better, so that little boost might just give someone the motivation to look even better...however it's not the Atkin's diet. Good luck though!

Maybe it sounds cheesy, but I think it builds on itself. The more you tan, the more you want to workout (otherwise your tan is a waste of money) to show your tan. It makes you more confident working out.

Hi, welcome to iamtan - Congratulations on the weight loss I do think there is somewhat of a connection, obviously tanners like to look good and I think having a nice tan motivates a lot of people to try and be more physically fit, I know it does for me.

Not at all. Take me for example. I know I don't eat properly. I don't exercise. And I probably couldn't out run a three legged dog.

I agree; I work in fitness and working out and keeping in good shape makes me want to tan to bring out my definition. I guess like many fitness people the two activities are closely linked.

Hi and Welcome to Iamtan!
Wow!! Congrats on the weight loss!!
yeah, I kinda think they go hand in hand myself, I'm working out 4 - 5 days a week now, and I'm starting back up with my regular tanning routine of 2 - 3 days a week probably next week so I'll look Extra good being fitting with a tan
I too see all shapes, sizes and people tan at my salon, so I do think it's for anyone and everyone

I don't think there's a particular link between tanning and fitness practically/technically, but I think that their common factor comes with many people who want to improve their image or/and themselves. I don't think all people who tan are particularly fit or slim from my experience, but they can become so because of motivation with one or the other.

Tanning and working out are both at least partially motivated by vanity. So I would expect there to be a certain amount of overlap for people doing both.

Wow... I'm w/ bonnie on this one! Working out keeps you healthy. Are you saying that people who take showers and wash their hair are vain too? People who brush their teeth? Cavity's aren't gonna kill ya either, but that's not gonna stop me from making sure I'm not filfthy in the mouth... or elsewhere.

I don't see vanity as being negative - it's a matter of taking pride in your appearance and there's nothing wrong with that. Most of us that tan and work-out do it because we care about how we look.

Thanks for all your thoughts on this topic. I think that tanning and things like exercising is something we can do for ourselves. Especially women in society, we are always taking care of others and never spend time for ourselves. We deserve it! It only makes us more productive and happier.

I dont agree with that, Jerry.. I think its about building confidence.. And there's nothing wrong with being happy & feeling good about the way you look!

That which is vain; anything empty, visionary, unreal, or unsubstantial; fruitless desire or effort; trifling labor productive of no good; empty pleasure; vain pursuit; idle show; unsubstantial enjoyment.
That came from dictionary.com..... "productive of no good"? Yeah, I don't see exercising as falling under the category of UNproductive. I rest my case.

I certainly wasn't looking to create "drama" or insult anyone. Of the few people who posted a reply after my post only ladyboss seemed to understand what I was saying. I don't view "vanity" as an inflamitory buzzword. Perhaps this is one of those "men are Mars, women are from Venus" moments. I don't view vanity as a bad thing. I regard it as taking extra care to look good. I think anyone who tans and/or works out regularly (I've done both for quite a few years) falls into that category. Certainly there are health and fitness benefits to a semi-daily exercise program. That is one of my motivations. But I have to admit if I could stay as trim and toned without lifting a finger I probably wouldn't take the time to exercise. I know it is good for me but it is vanity that propels me. That may not be true of everyone but I think it is true for most. The same is true of tanning. A lot of people talk about how calm and relaxing it is. And it is. But how many of us would pay the money and take the time to lay in a tanning bed it that is all it was. If those bulbs had no effect on our skin color I doubt many of us go just for the therapeutic aspect of the experience. We go because of the way it makes us look. I don't regard that as a bad outlook either for me or anyone else. Again, I wasn't trying to cause any "drama." I thought I had made a casual remark that anyone could agree with. But for those who took it the wrong way I am sorry if I upset you.

i work out a lot, and i think a tan makes you feel even better. although, a tan makes me feel skinnier than i am pretty much all the time. i think it just makes a person look brighter and better. IMO

I actually read somewhere that tanning can help you lose weight because it helps to raise your metabolism. I dont think that you can drop a hundred pounds or anything just from tanning alone, but i read it somewhere=) Don't know if it's true or not, but if it does, it just adds to the benefits list! Anywho, i know i feel skinnier when i tan!

I was tanning for awhile before I started to work out at the gym. But now that I found a place that I can work out at and tan it just makes it easier to do both. I work out like 5+ times a week and I actually like doing it more then tanning.

I am definitely not fond of fitness or working out myself (although I should be). I enjoy tanning for vanity and because it is relaxing.

I totally think they are related. People who want to look good and be healthy like to tan and exercise. They love feeling good and being the best they can be!

just from my user name I am sure you can tell that I WORKOUT. Not only am I a tan-a-olic, but I am also a workout alholic, if I don't get my 5-6 x's workout in every week I feel so guilty. I even have days that I double my workouts and I am at the gym at 5:00 a.m. and back at 5:30 for aerobics or spin class.

I think people who workout know that your muscles actually do look more defined if you are tan (thats if you lift weights)
